Teaching Approach:

I use a wide range of materials drawn from current piano methods as well as books that I have accumulated over almost three decades of teaching. My approach with beginners assumes an ability to read. Initially, students cover the basics of note-learning, theory and technique. At the late-beginner level I begin to introduce music from a variety of periods and styles. With more advanced students I incorporate elements of the Taubman technique. Students play in two recitals during the year: one informal and one at the end of the year which is open to the public.

Background:

I earned degrees in theory and piano from the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music. I perform annually for the Tuesday Morning Music Club in Springfield and play solo recitals, as well as chamber music, in the Amherst area.

I have been teaching and performing solo and chamber music in the New England/ New York region since 1978. I have 4 self-produced CD's featuring my performances of solo and four-hand piano music. In addition to maintaining my private studio, I teach piano at Northampton Community Music Center. Teaching Approach:

I love teaching! Watching a new piano student blossom and grow in confidence as their skills improve is a privilege and a joy. I draw from many current methods to create a learning experience that is informed by the varied needs of my students, always striving for maximum enjoyment and minimum stress. I place particular emphasis on theory and learning to sight-read properly. I also encourage interested students to try their hand at composition. Some of the young composers with whom I have worked have entered and won composition contests and have performed their original pieces at recitals. I work with students of all ages, and most enjoy working with beginners. I teach in my home in the after-school hours, and am available to travel to students’ homes during school hours for adult students or homeschoolers.

Background:

I homeschooled my children for eight years, directed a children’s choir, and taught at a multi-age learning center, and ran two successful piano studios in Ithaca, NY, and Bennington, VT, before moving with my family to the Pioneer Valley in the Fall of 2009. I am a life-long pianist, beginning piano study at 7 years old. I studied with Dr. Pamela Perry through high school, receiving the Chopin Piano Award. Majoring in Music Industry, I continued piano study in college at Colorado Women’s College and at the University of Colorado. I also play guitar and am a novice on the hammered dulcimer. I have accompanied choral groups over the years, but teaching piano remains my first love.

Teaching Approach:

My teaching involves developing a foundation for rhythm, ear training, counterpoint, harmony and piano technique. I adapted the Classical Indian "TaKaDiMi" rhythm system to western notation, creating a fun way to focus on body-mind balance. Although some of my students have reached junior concert level, I also enjoy working with young beginners who are adaptable to innovative approaches. I set goals for my students through having them perform in recitals. In some instances, professional musicians perform at these recitals and this inspires the students. For objective evaluation, I enter my students in the national guild of piano teachers auditions.

Background:

BA in Piano, M.A. in Composition from the University of Missouri. Summer study at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France, where I attended lectures by Nadia Boulanger. I also studied with Henry Cowell at Mills College and with Darius Milhaud at New York University. I have composed songs, choral works, chamber works, symphonies, operas, and works for dance. My ballad opera, "Around the Greenwood Tree" premiered in Bangkok, Thailand in1966. A recent work, "Voices for Freedom and Peace," is representative of my passion to promote social and environmental awareness through music. Of my awards, I value most the MacDowell Colony Fellowships and Fulbright Lectureship to India.

Teaching Approach:

My many years of Orff training and experiences have effected my piano teaching. I see my work as a process on a continuum where the teacher appears when the student is ready. Every student has a unique way of learning and I see my position as pedagogue to be translator and interpreter. In my studies in behavioral learning I further explored and developed understanding of this important way of teaching. Although I use "method" books, I hate to be locked in to any one method. Long ago when I majored in piano pedagogue at Longy, we learned to study and then compile our own "method books." I love the John Brimhall books, but am surprised how few teachers I have met use them. I also use Lila Fletcher, Donald Waxman and Bastien. I try to use creative original music from many books I have collected over the years and of course always am eager to introduce a Bach minuet or Shubert or Beethoven dance. My method utilizes kinesthetic approach where recognition of notes from page to instrument is stressed over the alphabetical labels, especially for young ages where they are struggling to master early reading and math skills, and often are already dealing with various learning issues. I try to present music as a magical language that should be fun above all, pleasurable and rewarding, especially when the student learns to apply him/her self by practicing.

Background:

Studied at Emerson College and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. Became fully certified Orff Schulwerk music teacher through NYU and taught classroom music in NYC for 20 years, including preK music and movement at the Bloomingdale House of Music and elementary music classes in a Harlem public school. I volunteered extensively designing recorder and music programs. I earned my B.A. degree at UWW at UMass in a combined teaching and behavioral studies program. Presently I substitute teach in the Amherst and Hill Town schools any and all subjects from preK through HS. I have taught piano privately for over 30 years and am now trying to replenish my student load which I allowed to dwindle while at UMass.

Teaching Approach:

I come to piano teaching through my love of all sorts of music. First, my students (ages 5-adult) gain a foundation in classical technique and repertoire. Students can try other styles if inclined. As a graduate of two music conservatories and also a parent, I am enthusiastic that we can create a superior learning environment. Lessons are at a grand piano in an 1860 farmhouse. Student recitals frequently include student compositions. “Your technique is inspired and seems to call out to the muse within the child.” -Mandy Marriott, parent

Background:

I also teach music at Westfield State College. I have a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) from Oberlin Conservatory, and a Master’s of Music (M.M. with Hon.) from New England Conservatory of Music. Since 1995 I have taught music to every level and every age group.

Teaching Approach:

I teach the Simply Music piano method. This revolutionary, Australian-developed method offers a breakthrough in music education. Students of all ages play great-sounding contemporary, classical, gospel, blues and duet pieces immediately, from their very first lessons. Reading music is postponed; this is a playing-based approach, which includes improvisation, chords and composition from the beginning.

Background:

My B.A. in Music Composition is from Yale. I have been a songwriter/composer, choir director, producer, arranger, accompanist, saloon singer, copyist and classroom teacher. In 2009, the Dayton Philharmonic premiered my "Songs of Rumi", a 30-minute piece for chamber orchestra and chorus. I grew up in Northampton, and moved back to my hometown in 2010. I lead the Peace In The Valley Community Choir at the Northampton Community Music Center. My piano teachcing career began only recently when I discovered the Simply Music method. My students' ages range from 7 to 80.

My goal is imparting to students the joy and satisfaction of making music at the piano. Background:

The piano and I were inseparable from the age of eight onward, through three college degree programs: B.M. in Piano Performance, Univ. Teaching Approach:

My teaching approach differs somewhat from the conventional style of teaching. When I teach students, first of all I am not actually teaching. I am allowing the student to go through his or her own process. If I push a style on a student, then too often then not, they will pull back. I try to make them aware of the totality of music, allowing them to see that there is no one way to music. With that said, I then get into the “nuts and bolts” of learning music. Specifically, I am making decisions every moment in the lesson that will further prompt the student to gather their own inner resources to allow them to hear their own voice. I invite the student to look at such topics as ear training, scale construction, voicings, tone development, technique, and repertoire to name a few.

Background:

I have had a great deal of performing and teaching experience throughout New England and New York. I received my B.A. in Jazz Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with a concentration in Jazz piano and improvisation. My teachers included Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef, Andy LaVerne and Kenny Werner. I also studied extensively with the renowned music educator Charlie Banacos until his passing in 2009. My private music lessons are held in my studio in Amherst and at the Northampton Community Music Center in Northampton. My latest CD is entitled “From My World” and features an all-acoustic solo piano setting recorded at the UMass Fine Arts Center. In addition, I am a nationally certified massage therapist.

In addition to learning from the many styles available, such as classical, folk, blues or rock, I also like to encourage students to hear the rhythms and melodies in everyday life and to translate these sounds onto the keys. My studio is equipped with a synthesizer, a grand piano and a harpsichord. I am also available as an accompanist.

Teaching Approach:

My integrated approach to teaching piano includes a combination of work on repertoire, keyboard theory, technique, and an historic understanding of pieces studied. I work mostly with adults and teens, as well as some children. My personal interest in the Dorothy Taubman approach to piano technique and in Yoga also inform my teaching style.

Background:

I teach piano privately, at the Williston Northampton School, and at Northampton Community Music Center, where I also co-direct the adult and youth Chamber Music Connection program, as well as the Summer Chamber Program for Teens. At NCMC I also co-facilitate a monthly Piano Connection class for adult pianists. I perform in chamber music and piano 4-hands recitals several times a year at NCMC and other schools and colleges in the Pioneer Valley area. I hold a B.A. in Piano Performance and Music Education from Marlboro College, and a M.M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and Music Education from UMass/Amherst.
